True Love

CS writes,

Fox news reported this story, Mother Delays Cancer Treatments So Baby Can Live. This mother of 4 gave life when death was certain. Driving home from work this thought crossed my mind, “What if I knew what day my life would end?” Would I hold my kids a little closer, and instill in them the values that mean the most to me? Or would I park them in front of a movie and ask them to not bother me anymore? Would I be patient and listen to their attempt at talking to me? Or would I say, “Not now!” and move on? Our lives are incredibly short.

My hear breaks for this family, but I celebrat with them the memory of one Mother who loved her child enough to give him life.

Remember MLK

JJ writes,

This is a bit late, but I always read what MEDIC wrote back a couple years ago about MLK. Civil rights are extremely important but so is a man’s character. Wasn’t he the one that said, “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Im the 82nd Airborne…

JJ writes,

82 Dec. 23, 1944 - “Battle of the Bulge” - An entire U.S. armored division was retreating from the Germans in the Ardennes forest when a sergeant in a tank destroyer spotted an American digging a foxhole. The GI, PFC Martin, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, looked up and asked, “Are you looking for a safe place?” “Yeah” answered the tanker. “Well, buddy,” he drawled, “just pull your vehicle behind me…

I’m the 82nd Airborne, and this is as far as the bastards are going.”

“The poster is a photograph of a dirty, scrappy, tough paratrooper, PFC Vernon Haught, of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, marching in the dead of that cold, snowy winter with a rucksack on his back. Going to reinforce the retreating American forces in Belgium. His expression leaves no doubt about his determination. He is moving out to go toe-to-toe with the enemy in Belgium. As you look at the poster, it strikes you that nowhere in this photograph do you see a parachute. And you and I both know there doesn’t have to be one — you simply know from the look: he’s Airborne. Under the photo is a quote from PFC Martin, also of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, who during the battle asked a retreating tank destroyer commander, “Are you looking for a safe place?” When the tank commander answered yes, PFC Martin replied, “Well buddy just pull that vehicle behind me — I am the 82d Airborne and this is as far as the bastards are going.” Imagine, an Airborne PFC telling a guy in a tank to follow him.” –General Henry H. Shelton Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Remarks at the 60th Anniversary of the Airborne Fort Benning, Georgia, April 13, 2000

I was just remembering the eighty deuce tonight and had to post one of my favorite WWII stories. I actually had the honor of jumping out of a C-130 with General Shelton in Ft. Benning, GA during the summer of 1998. Great man.

Another Wolf Bites the Dust

JJ writes,

Once again the Sheepdogs prevail… this time in Indianapolis, Indiana. A shopper at a grocery store pulls out his pistol and stops an armed robbery.

A grocery store customer in Indianapolis is being credited with halting an armed robbery by pulling his own weapon and pointing it at the assailant until police arrived. According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, Charlie Merrell, 51, was in a checkout line at a grocery store called Bucks IGA on the city’s south side when a “masked man jumped a nearby counter and held a gun on a store employee.” The police report cited by the newspaper said the incident happened at 5:17 in the afternoon Monday as Merrell was doing some year-end shopping. “While the suspect was demanding cash from the workers,” according to the police report, “Merrell pulled his own handgun, pointed it at the robber and ordered him to put down his weapon.” Read More

A Precedent for the New Year

JJ writes,

J. Hampton Keathley, III , Th.M. is one of my favorite Christian writers. He wrote a piece entitled, “A Precedent for the New Year (Luke 2:13-20)” and I thought it would be a good read to share given the date. It starts off like so…

“We stand on the threshold of a new year. Most people generally look at the new year as a fresh beginning, as an opportunity to kind of start over, to overcome a habit, or do a better job of something they see as important and that needs improvement. It may be parenting, being a better spouse, losing weight (which, by the way, is the number one resolution according to polls taken). It may be developing different priorities, using our time better, or a whole host of things that people would like to change. So, we usually hear a lot about New Year’s resolutions, resolutions which are usually broken in a matter of weeks. Many people are very pessimistic about the whole issue of making resolutions, and rightly so, because so many good intentions are followed by a history of past failures. But the new year is a time to reflect and think about what the past year has brought and what the new year could bring. It is a time to stop and analyze, to take stock of our priorities, values, pursuits, and goals. We need to ask questions like “Who am I, what am I doing with my life? What should I be doing as a Christian with my life and the stewardship God has given me?” After all, according to the Word of God, all of life is a stewardship–a stewardship of our time, talents, treasures, and God’s truth. In other words, since God’s plan and our stewardships revolve around and through the life of His Son, Jesus Christ, we need to each ask “How well am I responding to the Savior and the spiritual life that He has given me?”"

Turn the Page…

CS writes,

Another year is in the books. Reflection and hopeful anticipation fills our homes and lives. A sweet kiss to your spouse… good times.

On the horizon is not a brilliant sunset but a red sunrise. As the old saying goes, “Red at night is sailors delight. Red in the morning sailors take warning.” Reflection on this past year holds fond memories and rekindled friendships. It held many triumphs and a few try-slumps. However sweet the victories tasted when I look to the future this years outlook adds a tinge of bitterness to my taste.

The seeds our nation has sown over the years are budding blossoming. In 2005 our President signed the Real ID Act into law. It goes into effect in May of 2008. Prepare to relieve yourself of the burden of freedom. Well, personal privacy at-least.

We are making great progress in Iraq and it appears we are poised to continue this success. This does make the future a little brighter. To get our boys back home, or will we? I’m not talking cut and run. I’m talking victory and peace. But will 2008 be that year? Will the world find peace? OR will it continue to cry for “peace and safety”? Scriptures says they will cry for “peace and safety” and then sudden destruction. Which brings me to the crux of this post.

China. Yes, I am bringing out the well used soap box. This year China is holding the Olympics. China has been in our news - mainly about recalls. Are they trying to poison us? Well, that would be too slow and stupid. How about Taiwan? This year Taiwan is holding a “Referendum”. If you’ve been following this then you already know. If not then let me bring your attention to it. The Referendum is about Taiwan attempting to join the U.N. under the name of Taiwan. They have tried this once but it wasn’t voted on by the people of Taiwan.

China views this as a bonafied declaration of Independence (don’t even get me started on this). There has been so much goings on about this recently, but little has made it to the public eye. It is a flash point on the internation scene. Let’s pray that this doesn’t get out of hand.

Good times are now… this year holds many things that may bring our nation down several notches.
