CS writes,
As a child it was drilled in me. “Chad, you are what you eat, so put the Snickers away and eat this apple”. My stomache would turn as would my head in a defiant shake. It is true in a large defree, if you eat right then you are healthier. Most who have read my writings may consider them the work of a halfwit and that very well may be true. My logic may be off base a little, maybe even tilted too far to the right…
All jokes aside. If we are what we eat? Do we become what we think?
I love to day dream. And some of my wildest day dreams have come true. You’re probably in the same boat. Matter of fact I know you are. Much more importantly is this, you are who you are because of your thoughts and actions. You’ve heard the old adage, “Birds of a feather flock together.” That is partly true. You got to be careful of who you surround yourself with or they may bring you down with them.
Thinking is where we plan our actions, even on the subconscious level. Our thoughts can be poisoned by bad ideas. Bad ideas come in different ways, most of the time it is by peers. Paul said “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” In order to guard our hearts we must be careful of whom we choose to communicate with on an intimate level. I have enough time fighting ideas that are not given to me by others than to bring in others.
Another area of importance is entertainment. We can’t be given to entertainment that will corrupt our minds. Why? One scripture is helpful. Jesus stated that, “…but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.” We don’t want bad things coming out. We want good things. Paul gave a great way to determine what we allow into our thoughts, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
I’m struck by the sickness of our world. Then I hear some of the music that they love or movies that the world devours. Yes without Christ we are all lost and wallow in our sin, with Christ we should come out of it. I’ve asked my church recently if they would like to become the main character of their favourite movie? The blood, the lust, the lies… we love to be entertained until we become the story. Jesus saved us from the plot of destruction, yet, so many followers of Christ are tangled and frustrated because they take in what God saved them from.
Last week we all were shocked by the death and cruel killings at Virginia Tech, but the theaters were packed. The people flocked to watch “Disturbia” or some other horror type movie. What would happen if I became the movie? We condemn a killer while we get thrills watching people die for entertainment. No one actually gets hurt in the movies but the idea is there. I’m waiting for a persecution movie to hit the theaters. Of how followers of Christ laid down their lives for the cause of Christ. Read about those brave people here.
To close out this soap box session I want to just remind myself. I am the only Bible some people will ever read. I am the hands of Christ on this earth, and if you are a follower, you are his hands. I can only wish to help the hurting and warn the wayward.
